국내 최고 수준의 호텔로 평가 받는 강릉 씨마크 호텔의 한옥동이다. (본관 설계: 리차드 마이어) 호안재라는 이름은 ‘나비가 편안하게 쉬는 곳’이란 뜻이다.
문간채, 사랑채, 안채, 별채의 4개 동으로 구성되어 있다. 숙소로서 기능함은 물론 연회, 회의 등 다양한 용도로 활용할 수 있다. 특히 사랑채는 평창올림픽 당시 문재인 대통령과 구테레쉬 유엔 사무총장과의 회담 장소로 사용되었다.
경포호를 사이에 두고 유서깊은 경포대를 마주하는 위치에 안채의 누마루가 위치하는 등, 지역의 역사와 인문지리적 요소를 최대한 설계에 반영했다. 울창한 송림 속에 자리잡고 있으며 바다와 경포호의 풍광을 동시에 즐길 수 있다.
설계 당시 전통호텔의 정체성과 운영 방식 등에 대한 자료 수집을 위해 태국 치앙마이의 만다린 오리엔탈, 스페인의 파라도르, 중국 항조우의 푸춘리조트 등 세계적 명소들에 대한 방문 조사를 거쳤다. 지하에는 대규모 연회를 위한 보조 주방이 있고 원활한 유지관리를 위해 모든 설비는 지하 공동구를 통해 연결되어 있다.
DJHA designed the hanok annex for the Seamarq hotel in Gangneung, widely praised as one of the best luxury hotels in Korea. (The main building was designed by Richard Meier.) The name Hoanjae means ‘where a butterfly rests comfortably’.
Hoanjae consists of 4 buildings: mungan-chae, sarang-chae, an-chae and byeol-chae. They are designed to function independently or collectively, for not just accommodations but also functions and conferences. For example, the sarang-chae was the venue for the meeting between President Moon and António Guterres, Secretary-General of the United Nations, during the Pyeongchang Olympics in 2018.
DJHA’s design reflects rich historic and geographic contents of the Gangneung area; the numaru of the an-chae directly faces the historic Gyeongpo-dae, across the Lake Gyeongpo. Surrounded by thick pine tree forest, Hoanjae commands open views toward both the ocean and the lake.
During the design process, DJHA made research trips to a number of world-class traditional hotels, to collect data and information about the design and operation of super luxury facilities, such as the Madarin Oriental(Chiang Mai, Thailand), Paradors(Spain) and the Fuchun Resort(Hangzhou, China). The basement of Hoanjae has a spacious service kitchen and the all M/E facilities can be accessed via underground tunnels.
