이 건물은 경복궁 서쪽의 유서깊은 역사지구인 통의동에 위치한다. 청와대 초입이며 서울 시내에서 가장 아름다운 산책길의 하나라는 입지 조건을 고려하여 보행자 중심의 설계를 하였다.
1, 2층은 문학 강연, 전시, 음악회 등 다양한 문화활동을 위한 공간이며 3, 4층은 도서출판 열린책들의 사무실로 사용된다. 인도에 면한 건물의 볼륨을 줄이기 위해 2층을 후퇴하여 효자로를 내려보는 발코니로 활용하도록 하였다. 보행자는 건물 중앙의 열린 통로를 통해 후정으로 자유롭게 드나들 수 있다. 측면의 장대한 외부계단은 드라마틱한 공간적 체험을 제공할 뿐 아니라, 건물 내를 오가는 사람들이 자연스럽게 만나는 곳이기도 하다. 자동차는 건물의 후면 도로를 통해 접근하며, 건물 내의 모든 문턱을 제거하여 편한 진입이 가능하도록 하였다.
This building is located in Tongeui-Dong, an historic area west of the Kyongbok Palace. The building’s proximity to the Blue House, the presidential residence of Korea, and the reputation of the tree-lined Hyoja-Ro in the front as one of the most beautiful boulevards in Seoul, bring pedestrian concerns to the front.
The 1st and 2nd floors are for various cultural activities, such as literary meetings, exhibitions and concerts; the top two floors will house the Open Books Co., a well-known publishing company. The long horizontal set-back on the 2nd floor is to reduce the volume of the 4-story building; it is also to be used as a balcony overlooking Hyoja-Ro. People can walk to the back garden through an open path running in the middle of the building. The huge, dramatic exterior stair on the side is a place of casual encounters. Underground parking is reached from the back road and there are no threshold anywhere in the building, allowing people to move freely and with ease.
