의왕시 소재 철도박물관의 기존 시설을 대체하는 현상공모에 참여하였다. 한국철도의 근현대 서사에 대한 그간의 연구를 바탕으로 진행하였다.
서사의 기하학: 鐵魔에서 鐵馬로
철도는 근대 기계문명의 가장 강렬한 상징이다. 처음에 그것은 철마(鐵魔), 즉 괴물로 다가왔지만, 시간이 지나자 철마(鐵馬), 즉 편리한 일상 속 존재가 되었다. 철도는 자연이라는 배경 속에 자기만의 강렬한 선을 그으며 세상을 하나로 연결했다.
이 프로젝트는 그 역사적 궤적을 공간의 언어로 번역한다. 인프라와 도시, 동선과 구조가 교차하는 기하학적 질서 속에서 철도의 기억과 감성이 배열된다. 주변의 맥락과 호응하는 도시적 장치이면서 풍성한 공간과 서사를 제공하는 건축적 장소로서 우리가 철도와 맺어온 관계를 새롭게 인식하게 한다.
Geometry of Narrative: From Iron Monster to Iron Horse
Railroads are among the most powerful symbols of the mechanical civilization of modernity. At first they appeared as the Iron Monster (鐵魔) — something uncanny and even frightening — but over time they became the Iron Horse (鐵馬), an integral presence within the ease of everyday life. Cutting their own forceful lines across the backdrop of nature, railroads connected the world into a single network.
This project translates that historical trajectory into the language of space. Within a geometric order where infrastructure and city, circulation and structure intersect, the memory and sensibility of the railroad are arranged and revealed. As an urban device that resonates with its surrounding context, and as an architectural place offering spatial richness and narrative depth, it invites us to newly recognize the relationship we have formed with the railroad.
