캐슬오브스카이워커스는 프로배구구단인 현대캐피탈 스카이워커스를 위한 복합훈련시설이다. 천안 교외의 낮은 구릉지에 위치한 연면적 9,335m²의 4층 건물로서 탁 트인 주변 경관을 갖고 있다.
배구 코트를 중심에 두고 다양한 훈련시설 및 숙소가 이를 입체적으로 둘러싸고 있는 3차원 중정식 건물이다. 건물 내에 존재하는 각기 다른 층의 모든 공간은 기본적으로 사각형, 원, 대각선이 조우하며 중첩된 기하학 속에서 만들어졌다.
구조 및 단열벽체로부터 250mm 이격되어 건물 전체를 둘러싸고 있는 알루미늄 재질의 익스펜디드 메탈은 여름의 높은 태양광은 걸러내고 겨울의 낮은 태양광은 실내로 유입하는 기능성 외피이다. 이는 합리적인 초기 투자를 통해 장기적인 유지관리 비용을 감소하고자 했다. 높은 공극율을 가진 이 외장재는 날씨, 태양의 방향과 그리고 관찰자의 시점에 따라 끊임없이 변화하는 섬세하고 다양한 미학을 만들어낸다.
본관과 분리된 별관의 곡선은 주변 지형과 연속되어 있으며, 치열한 훈련을 이겨내는 선수들의 오락과 휴식을 위한 작은 휴게공간으로 만들어졌다.
캐슬오브스카이워커스는 고도의 경기력을 유지해야 하는 프로 스포츠 구단을 위하여 효율적인 훈련환경과 쾌적하고 편안한 생활공간을 동시에 창조하고자 하는 스포츠 전문시설 디자인의 새로운 사례다.
Castle of Skywalkers is a training complex for the Hyundai Capital Skywalkers, a leading professional volleyball team in Korea. Located on a gentle, rolling hill in the suburbs of the city of Cheonan, this 4-story, 9,335sm building commands a panoramic view toward the surroundings.
At the heart of the building is an atrium, with various training facilities and dorm rooms circling around a volleyball court at the center. The plan, based on a rectangle, a circle and diagonals, is an exercise in manipulating layered geometry that corresponds to different programs at different levels.
The external walls are conceived as a ‘functional skin’; the outer layer of expanded aluminum panels, separated 250mm from the inner layers of structure and insulation, keeps the high summer sun out and lets in the low winter sun, reducing the long-term operational cost of the building at a reasonable initial cost. The highly porous cladding also generates delicate and versatile aesthetics that constantly changes depending on weather, sun’s direction and viewers’ locations.
Separated from the main building is an annex, whose serpentine lines are shared with the surrounding landscape. Conceived as a small ‘party house’, the annex is a place for amusement and relaxation for professional sportsmen under intense training routines.
Castle of Skywalkers showcases a new trend in sports facilities design seeking to create both an efficient training environment and a pleasant and comfortable place of living for a highly competitive athletic team.
