HWANG, Doojin

Architect HWANG Doojin was born in Seoul in 1963. He studied architecture at Seoul National University and its graduate school. While he was working at SAC (Seoul Architectural Consultants), he got the Korean Government Overseas Scholarship, which made it possible for him to study at the Yale School of Architecture. After finishing his studies at Yale, he worked at TSKP(Tai Soo Kim Partners) in the US and Korea for a total of 7 years. In 2000, Doojin started his own practice, Doojin Hwang Architects.

An interest in geometry is commonly found in his works. He has been concerned with the meaning of manipulating space, structure and form in various geometrical orders. Even his Hanok works, which made his career unique, is an exploration of the orthogonal grid order intrinsic to post-and-lintel wood structure. In conjunction with a parallel theme of understanding life culture through a historical viewpoint, his architecture aims to go beyond simple formalism.

Reading and life experiences are two pillars upon which Hwang, Doojin builds his productive career. He is also a writer. “Where Is Your Seoul?” a collection of essays on his architectural home, Seoul and “Hanok Is Back”, a new Hanok-based architectural treatise, have earned him a reputation in both theory and practice.

He has won a number of awards, including the Acheon Prize from the Korean Institute of Architects, the Prime Minister Prize of the Korean Architecture Award and the UNESCO Asia-Pacific Cultural Heritage Award. He also participated in the Megacity Network Contemporary Korean Architecture travelling exhibition as both an exhibitor and an exhibition designer. In 2010, he represented Korea in the “Active Sustainable Design Now” conference held at the Shanghai Expo. As of 2011, he is part of the advisory committee of the National Museum of Korea.

When he is not working, Doojin enjoys studying 3D tessellation, which he calls “the 3D version of Escher’s drawings”. He also likes walking around the Seoul Fortress.
