뉴질랜드 동남쪽의 무인도인 안티포드 섬(Antipodes Island)에 연구자들을 위한 시설을 설계하는 국제 아이디어 현상공모에서 황두진건축은 Honorable Mention을 받았다.
극단과 대비로 형성된 안티포드 섬은 북과 남, 공존과 고립, 보호와 성찰이라는 이중성 위에 놓인 하나의 건축적 제안을 탄생시킨다. 이 프로젝트는 이 외딴 땅의 특수한 조건에 응답하는 두 개의 ‘에코(Echo)’로 구성된다. 북쪽에는 화산암에 단단히 고정된 메인 돔이 자리한다. 반투명하고 거주 가능한 쉘로 형성된 이 돔은 250㎡ 규모로, 집단적 노동과 적응을 전제로 한 피난처이자 하나의 생활 시스템이다. 내부는 식물 생태 조사에 사용되는 보태니컬 쿼드랏(botanical quadrat)에서 착안한 바닥 그리드에 의해 조직되며, 작업·샤워·주방·취침·위생과 같은 필수 기능들은 각각 독립된 모듈로 구성된다. 빗물은 지면에서 이격된 바닥 하부에 저장되고, 조밀하게 배치된 태양광 패널은 구조물 전체에 에너지를 공급한다. 프리패브 복합 슬래브 시스템을 통해 효율적인 조립이 가능하며, 실내 정원은 일상적 삶을 유지하게 함으로써 돔을 자급적인 거주 환경으로 완성한다. 남쪽의 험준한 지형 속에는 보다 은밀한 버블(Bubble)이 놓인다. 최소한의 공기주입식 파빌리온인 이 공간은 내밀하고 고요한 성찰을 위한 장소로, 19세기 난파선이 있었던 지점 인근에 위치한다. 이 버블은 고립과 사유가 극대화되는 순간을 담아내는 장치다. 이 프로젝트는 단순한 피난처를 넘어, 안티포드 섬을 형성해 온 대립적 조건들 사이의 섬세한 균형, 그 경계 위에 놓여있다.

Doojin Hwang Architects received an Honourable Mention in an international ideas competition for the design of a research facility on Antipodes Island, an uninhabited island located southeast of New Zealand.
Antipodes Island, shaped by extremes and contrasts, gives rise to a project built on dualities — between North and South, togetherness and isolation, shelter and reflection. Two “echoes” respond to the singular nature of this remote land. To the North, anchored in volcanic rock, the main Dome emerges as a translucent, inhabitable shell. At 250m2, it is both a refuge and living system — a place of collective effort and adaptability. Its open interior is structured by a floor grid inspired by botanical quadrat, where essential functions (work/shower/kitchen/sleeping/restroom) are treated as distinct modules. Rainwater is stored beneath the raised floor, and a dense field of solar panels powers the structure. Prefabricated composite slabs allow for efficient assembly. Indoor gardens sustain daily life, transforming the dome into a self-sufficient habitat. To the South, discreet across the rugged landscape, the Bubble, a minimal inflatable pavilion offers a quiet and favorable space for introspection. Set near the site of a 19th-century shipwreck, it is the paroxysms reflect for solitude and contemplation. More than a shelter, the project inhabits the edge — a fragile balance drawn from the very oppositions that shape Antipodes Island.
