국내 최대 수목원 중 하나이며 제주의 명소인 카멜리아 힐의 전경을 둘러보기 위한 전망대로 낮은 언덕 위에 자리 잡고 있다. 카멜리아 힐 전체는 물론, 남쪽의 태평양과 산방산, 군산, 마라도 ,가파도 등 이 일대의 주요 지형 지물을 조망할 수 있다.
최상단 높이 9미터의 전망대는 철근 콘크리트 구조로 되어 있으며 특수 제작한 스틸 폼으로 시공하였다. 소라의 형태 언어에서 영감을 얻었고 배치에서 디테일에 이르기까지 꽉 짜인 기하학으로 구성하였다.
완만하게 펼쳐진 진입 계단으로 정상에 올라 조망을 감상한 후, 원형의 진출 계단으로 다시 지상을 밟는다. 전망대의 기하학적 질서는 주변 자연의 유기적 아름다움과 대비된다.
주된 재료는 백색 칼라 콘크리트, 스테인레스 스틸, 현무암 등이다.
The SPIRAL is the observation tower for the Camelia Hill, one of the largest botanical gardens in Korea and a major tourist attraction on Jeju island. Located on a gentle hill, the SPIRAL commands a panoramic view toward surrounding geographical features such as the Pacific, Mt. Sanbang, Mt. Gun, Mara Island and Gapa island.
The 9m-high tower is a reinforced concrete structure built with custom-made steel forms. Inspired by the formal language of a seashell, the SPIRAL is a meticulously woven system of geometry from the overall layout down to the last details.
The visitors reach the top by walking on the gently curved access stair and return to the ground via spiral exit stair. The geometrical order of the SPIRAL is in contrast to the organic beauty of the surrounding nature.
The major buildings materials are: white color concrete, stainless steel and basalt.
